Hair loss affects a significant proportion of the population, with about 60% of men and 10% of women experiencing it due to various factors such as aging, genetics, medical conditions, or hormonal changes. Among men, hair transplantation is the most commonly performed surgery because of the high frequency of hair loss and its psychological impact.
Normally, the human scalp contains approximately 100,000 hairs, and even more in individuals with blonde hair. With aging, it is natural to experience some degree of hair loss, and losing up to 30% of hair is generally considered acceptable. However, when hair loss exceeds 50%, it is considered a cosmetic issue, causing thinning of hair in affected areas, which further exacerbates the problem.
The objective of hair transplantation is to transfer new hair follicles into bald or thinning areas, including the eyebrows. The hair follicles used for transplantation are typically extracted from the back or sides of the head and can include 1-4 hairs.
Hair Transplant
(FUE) Follicular Unit Extraction
The most common technique used in hair transplantation is the removal of each follicular unit individually. During the procedure, a micro motor device is used by the surgeon to remove the individual follicles from the scalp. Incisions are made around the follicular unit to separate the graft from its immediate surroundings and are then taken by a depilation tweezer for preparation. The units are then transplanted to the recipient area. Depending on the case, an average surgery can involve placing 1200-3600 grafts.
The donor area, which is usually located at the back or sides of the head, hides the incision lines, resulting in no visible scarring. Even if the head is shaved, only tiny dots will remain. The newly transplanted hair from the follicles may fall out during the first month but will regrow thereafter.
The surgery typically lasts from 4 to 6 hours and is performed under local anesthesia with sedation (deep sleep). Patients will stay overnight in the hospital and will have three scheduled check-ups: after surgery, before discharge, and six days following surgery. Patients will be hosted for one week in Istanbul. Recovery time for appearance is estimated to be between 4 and 6 weeks. Full recovery and settling of the surgery will take approximately 6 to 12 months.
Also known as strip harvesting, follicular unit transfer is another technique used to remedy hair loss. Unlike follicular unit extraction, it involves removing a single strip of hair from an area of the scalp where hair follicles are plentiful. The strip is then divided into cubic grafts for transplantation. At Prime Med Tours, we do not typically recommend strip harvesting unless it is determined to be the best option for specific cases. This is because the procedure can result in more visible scarring and may not meet the expectations of some patients.
The surgery typically lasts between 4 and 6 hours and is performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Patients are usually required to stay overnight in the hospital and will have 3 follow-up appointments, one after surgery, one before discharge, and one 6 days after the surgery.
We will host you in Istanbul for one week, during which time your appearance will begin to recover, with final results being visible within 6 to 12 months.
(FUT) Follicular Unit Transfer
This procedure is among the most gratifying for our hair transplantation patients. However, it can be challenging for inexperienced surgeons due to the intricate recipient area selection, growth direction, and angulation. When executed correctly, either partially or for the entire eyebrow, it produces excellent results. First, we will discuss and agree on the design of your new eyebrows based on your preferences and our surgeon's recommendations. Typically, the donor hairs are extracted from the back of the head using the follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique. Our specialized transplantation team will meticulously prepare the grafts for the operation, usually comprising 100-450 grafts per eyebrow, each containing one or a few hairs.
The transplanted hair will remain intact for 2-3 weeks before shedding, after which it will regrow in 4 months and attain its permanent shape before the first year. The procedure lasts between 2 to 4 hours, and we administer local anesthesia with sedation to induce deep sleep. You will stay in the hospital overnight, and we will schedule three follow-up appointments; after the surgery, before your discharge, and six days after the surgery. We will also host you in Istanbul for a week, during which you can recover from the procedure. Your appearance will begin to improve within 1 to 2 weeks, and complete recovery and surgical settling will take between 8 to 12 months.
